Description

Breast Massage for Breastfeeding Mothers

Breast milk duct blockage is a common problem among breastfeeding women. It can occur due to various reasons such as infrequent direct breastfeeding, milk stasis, stress, or a high-fat diet.

Breast massage can help relieve or prevent milk duct blockages. It also promotes milk flow, stimulates milk production, and increases milk supply. Additionally, it can help firm the breasts and reduce the risk of mastitis.

General Information

Breast massage typically involves warm compresses, massage, and milk expression, and should be performed by a qualified professional.

  • Warm compresses: This helps improve blood circulation in the breasts, relieve breast engorgement, and break up milk clogs. However, avoid direct contact with the nipple and areola as these areas are sensitive.
  • Massage: Circular massage of the breast can relieve engorgement.
  • Nipple and areola massage: Use the index finger and middle finger to support the areola and use the thumb of the other hand to gently press and roll the nipple until it softens. Then, massage the areola.
  • Milk expression: Use a C-hold to support the breast and use the thumb and index finger to compress the breast from the areola towards the nipple.

Note: When receiving a breast massage, it is recommended to bring your breast pump.

Before the procedure:

  • Inform the medical professional if you have any underlying medical conditions, osteoporosis, fractures, implants, or a pacemaker.
  • Bring any X-rays for reference.
  • Inform the medical professional if you are taking blood thinners, have any allergies, or underlying medical conditions.

After the procedure:

  • Avoid staying in the same position for too long.
  • Follow up with your doctor as scheduled.

Who is suitable for this service?

  • Postpartum mothers who wish to breastfeed.
  • Mothers with low milk supply or poor milk flow.
  • Mothers with symptoms of milk duct blockage such as breast lumps, swollen and red breasts, visible veins, decreased milk flow, changes in milk color, white spots on the nipple, breast pain, fever, and general malaise.

Note: Breast massage is a routine practice for breastfeeding mothers. Consult with a healthcare professional for guidance on self-breast massage. In addition to breast massage, mothers should breastfeed frequently, at least 8-12 times a day, and completely empty both breasts to prevent milk stasis, which can lead to milk duct blockage or mastitis.
